How to Create OS X Yosemite Installer Media?

It has been said that Happiness doesn’t come from easy work but human being always seeks easy ways to accomplish difficult tasks in this computerized scenario. If we talk about the latest Mac version OS X 10.10 Yosemite then for the novices, the process of downloading and installing gets complicated. Accessing Mac App Store and upgrading system is not as easy as Apple experts advise it. On the other hand, if there are multiple Mac machines and a user is asked to install an OS X in all those then it would be so hectic and time consuming by accessing App store and initiating OS X installation process each time. Now, what’s an easy way to do this activity? If you are in the same situation and want to make it in quick steps then scroll down to get the solution.

Experts have made it very easy by giving a solution of ‘creating a bootable USB Installer media’. If you need to install this latest Yosemite version then ensure about the software and requirement from this image firstly.

Hardware & Software Requirements
    
       
If Mac machine is running OS X Mavericks or any earlier version (till OS X 10.6.8) and Mac model is compatible too then Installation of Yosemite can be started by accessing ‘Mac App Store’ (from Apple Menu). Click on ‘download’ button to start downloading and installing the latest OS X 10.10 Yosemite version. Once the downloading process will be completed, installation process will be started automatically. Moreover, if you only want to keep the downloaded version and install it on some other time then find the ‘Yosemite installer app’ in ‘Applications’ folder and start installing the OS X at the suitable time.

Before initiating all these, please back up Mac hard drive either by Time Machine or Mac drive cloning software to an external hard drive.

How to Create Yosemite Installer Media?

It carries two steps. First one step includes creating a bootable USB drive and the second step includes copying files into bootable USB drive. 

Creating Bootable USB Flash Drive
  • As mentioned in the above image, take a 8GB USB drive and connect it into Mac machine. Now, access Disk Utility by navigating through Applications>> Utilities folder.
  • Select USB drive from left pane in Disk Utility window and click on ‘Erase’ tab from the top above side
  • Go to Format option and select ‘Mac OS X Extended Journaled’ option
  • Mention the name or keep it as by default in Name option
  • Once all the above points are fulfilled, then click on ‘Erase’ button at down right side
  • Let this process gets completed. Click on ‘Partition’ tab for creating a new partition
  • Click on ‘Option’ and choose ‘GUID Partition Table’ as the partition scheme. Set its name to Untitled.

Creating an OS X Yosemite bootable USB drive

  • On the other side, download OS X 10.10 from Mac App Store and let the downloading process finish. Quit from the OS X installer and set the downloaded file's name to Install OS X Yosemite.app in the Applications folder
  • Launch Terminal app (Applications>> Utilities) and type ‘sudo’ and give a single space as shown in below image.
  • Open the ‘Finder’ window and goto Applications folder. Locate ‘Install OS X Yosemite’ app (downloaded earlier from Mac App Store). Right click on app and select “Show Package Contents”. Goto Contents>> Resources. Find ‘createinstallmedia’ from Resources context menu and drag this app to the Terminal window


  • Type ‘--volume’ and give a single space again.
  • Now, drag USB drive (from Finder window) here in Terminal window
  • Type ‘--applicationpath’ and give a single space in Terminal window
  • Now, drag ‘Install OS X Yosemite’ program from Applications folders here to the Terminal window. Finally it’s the time to press enter
  • If any password window is prompted then give password and press ‘Y’
  • Wait for few minutes till the process finished successfully. Once it is finished; ‘Done’ message will be shown and carried you back to the Command Prompt with a bootable media drive.

 Please check this bootable Installer media by plugging into machine. Restart Mac by pressing (option) Alt key and select this Installer media drive and start installing OS X.
