12 Mac Tune up Tips to Optimize Performance

It has been said that our safety depends upon cleanliness. Everybody likes cleanliness among its surroundings. If you are also one of them, then do you cleanup your trusted Mac on regular intervals? Although, it is a common problem of Mac running slow after usage over time among its users but the important thing is to find out the causes as well as the right time to rectify those. Hence, few manual tips and a wonderful application are mentioned further for optimizing Mac performance.

There are issues, which make Mac a little slow in performing at best. In older machines, it can be seen for spotlight running unnecessarily and eat huge memory power. Additionally, if drive is overfilled then still it behaves a little lazy in accessing files. In a nutshell, here are few helpful tips to make Mac good.
  1. Remove all unwanted languages, existing by default in OS X by using any program or any handy utility like Monolingual and reclaim several hundreds of disk space.  
  2. Clear out all the log files by downloading and running Onyx on weekly or monthly basis.
  3. If hard drive is overfilled or says 90 % full and takes longer time to access files and folders then Mac drive is fragmented and must be defragmented by using any reliable software. There are many efficient tools like Stellar Drive Defrag, which can solves these issues by defragmenting large bulky volumes with in few clicks and let the user to sit with an ease. After defragmentation, you will see a magnificent boost in performance.
  4. Power outages, hard restarts and system crashes are the causes, which force to verify and repair the disk. Run the Disk Repair utility (Applications> Utilities> Disk Repair) and repair the disk and disk permissions for correcting the issues with directories. Please keep in mind that startup disk cannot be repaired with Disk Repair option. Rather use Mac install disc to resolve the issues in startup disk.
  5. Manage drive processing power and memory by disabling dashboard widgets. You can do this by launching Terminal (Applications > Utilities > Terminal). Write 
    defaults write com.apple.dashboard mcx-disabled -boolean YES  and hit enter.

  6. If you are using an Intel based Mac then remove all unnecessary PowerPC code from Universal Binaries.
  7. Remove unnecessary log items existing on Mac. To see the login items on your Mac, go to Apple menu > System Preferences > Users & Groups and select your user account, and then click the ‘Login Items’ tab. All the Items listed here launch themselves when the Mac boots. To disable (or remove) all or selected items, click to check the check box in front of individual items, and then click the minus (-) button.

  8. Over time to time, Apple launch different updates of OS X and the applications. Make sure about all necessary software updates installed to avoid application malfunctioning. Moreover, keep your Mac system updated rather an obsolete one.
  9. Remove those fonts, which are not in use by going to the Finder tab and remove those unwanted fonts from Library> fonts.
  10. Try to keep turn off those items, which are not in use say, Turn off Universal Access (System Preferences> Universal Access), Bluetooth and Internet Sharing.
  11. Scrutinize Activity Monitor for analyzing anything that is running unnecessarily and consuming memory resources.
  12. Desktop is first welcome screen where we seek most of the time. Try to organize your desktop by keeping the necessary files and folders orderly.
