How to Use FaceTime for Making & Taking Calls in OS X 10.10?

It is great to see the faces of your near and dear love-ones rather listening their voice or simply talking. It sounds awesome if a phone call comes with a friendly face. If you are an iPhone user, then you must be aware about the glorious quality feature 'FaceTime'. Though, iPhone is a smart phone but it has solved many communication problems with Proximity. There are many iPhone users who know about 'FaceTime' feature for making calls but not well verse about its proficiency and maneuver.

'FaceTime' is one of the best feature in iPhone available for Mac users to talk, relish, laugh and to be delighted with anyone having iPhone, iPad, iPod (touch facility) or Mac enriched with 'FaceTime' facility.

This app is also beneficial, if you forgot your iPhone in your jacket or in your bag at home then you can make and receive calls with your Mac, iMac, MacbookPro (if settings are done properly).


Like others, if you are having another call on 'FaceTime' and you get another call waiting then you can put the current conversation on hold. Besides this, unique ringtones can be set to identify a specific caller.

How to Make Calls with Mac?
Search and double-click on the 'FaceTime' icon from the dock bar in your Mac. If you don't have one, then search it through 'Spotlight' feature (by pressing Command + Spacebar together) by typing 'FaceTime' and hit Enter once you locate it in the list.

If you haven't downloaded 'FaceTime' app yet then download it and then simply enter Apple ID to enable this Application. Once it is enabled then enter phone number and Email ID to get other FaceTime users existing in your Contacts. In case, if you have more than one Email address then you can add others also and confirm the both.

  1. Click on 'FaceTime'.
  2. Click on Preferences.
  3. Check 'iPhone Cellular Calls' button, if unchecked.
Once you are done with the above mentioned settings, 'FaceTime' will automatically access the built-in iSight camera and microphone (third party Mic and web cam can also be used to enjoy the conversation without distraction)

On the other hand, take your iPhone and manage the following Settings
  • Tap on Settings
  • Tap on 'FaceTime'
  • Turn On 'iPhone Cellular Calls' by tapping the button in the right side

For making and taking calls, please ensure about the few things mentioned below:
  • 'FaceTime' app must be in running mode on both devices (iPhone & Mac)
  • Manage the preference as defined above in both devices
  • Both devices should be logged into the same iCloud account
  • Both devices should access the same WiFi network for better working
Once you ensure all the above points, get ready to take call in the following format.

If you want to receive the call, click on 'Accept' button else click 'Decline'. Once you choose Accept option then Video call begins from the next moment.

In case, if you are still unable to make a call to another user then please check the 'Preference Settings' once again and ensure this statement:

The call will go through, if the recipient has also set up 'FaceTime' on his or her device, else it will fail

Additionally, if you want to make calls, simply open 'Contacts' and bring your mouse cursor over the number you want to call. Once you move aside the cursor, a blue phone icon should appear to the right of it. Now, click the icon to initiate a call.

Few good thing are:

If you are out from 'FaceTime' app in Mac then you can also get the calls safely.

If you want to use this feature in Mac then 'Turn off' 'FaceTime' app by navigating through 'Preferences'
