All Mac users know that
defragmentation process speeds up Mac by defragmenting large bulky
files and optimize drive storage. Although, Defragmenting Mac is no
more confusion but it needs complete concentration before proceeding
towards it. Once we start storing the data into drive; it usually
works well up to 50% level and as it exceeds from this level, Mac
tends to behave slow. This situation forces a user to delete
duplicate data, unwanted applications, unused widgets and sometimes
user directly switches to Mac drive defragmentation process.
If you are a Mac user then
you must be aware about this fact that SSD's don't need
defragmentation or we can say, it's worthless to defrag the large
bulky files existing on SSD. There may be other reasons like bad or
failing sectors, less RAM, old OS X version of SSD slow. Well, the
best remedy is to make a successful backup of Mac HD in advance onto
another drive. That external drive must be formatted as GUID and OS X
journaled. You can manually drag all the files and apps to another
drive but this method can not take OS X. Any reliable Mac drive
defrag software can be used to replicate Mac drive.

Tips to Defrag Safely
- Large bulky files are not always the reasons of slow Mac. It has also been seen that due to the corrupted file system, Mac performs slow. If you have an impression that there is no bad sectors or any hardware issues like clicking or grinding sounds and only File System is corrupted then go for formatting Mac drive and re install file system again to restore the data and applications from backup.
- Apple doesn't provide any built-in tool for drive defragmentation rather 'Repair Disk'. So there is a need to safely defrag OS X. Try to reduce large files like movies, video songs etc. existing on boot drive up to 50% down of the drive filled value. Because over filled drive takes more time to boot. Moreover, this free room will be useful to install a third party Mac drive Defrag software for defragmenting Mac.
- Most slow sown issues occur due to the less RAM. Quit open apps in order to release the occupied memory and enhance virtual memory.
- Before starting Mac drive defragmentation process, update OS X with the latest version and few other system updates to fix the bugs automatically.
- Additionally, check for the sufficient drive space (near 5-10%) required for temporary files, caches, sleep files etc.
In conclusion, there is a
need to mention that OS X itself implements 'Hot File Adaptive
Clustering' zone to analyze the frequently accessed files stored on
drive. OS X defragment these files and stores onto the drive for the
fastest access.
Unlike Windows, Mac stores
the small files very efficiently and don't let a user to defrag OS X
on regular basis. Mac is very generous at defragmenting those files
automatically
- Which are less than 20 MB
- Which are not in use
- Which have more than 8 fragments
